Choosing The Right Song

Have you ever loved a song only to find out the songs meaning is completely different to what you thought? This has bought many brides & grooms undone when picking songs for their favourite day, what may seem like a love song on the surface may actually be a breakup song or something a lot more deep or sinister, so song choice is critical especially for those token moments such as the wedding waltz or cutting of the cake. Songs have special meanings to each individual so it’s hard to tell a client they may need to re-think their choice because the songs intention or message however one could argue that the song should be enjoyed for what it is without having to deconstruct what it actually means. But when your connecting a song to an life event (wedding, party or funeral) then it’s probably best to get it right as it will leave a lasting impression.

Love songs can masquerade in many forms, whether it’s being truly in love to the exact opposite falling out of love, jealousy, breaking up or moving on etc so it can be hard to tell what is truly being said especially when you’re caught up in the mood of the music itself. For example did you know Ed Sheerans song “give me love” is about a relationship that fell apart and you're asking for it to be put back together wanting a second chance, you wouldn’t know it when listening to the music and the title of the song.

Song meanings are very literal, cryptic, full of innuendo and metaphors ,even ambiguous and can take a bit of digging to find out the real meaning. They can also be open to interpretation especially if the artist isn’t forthcoming to the songs initial meaning.

Sam Smith (Stay with me) – Is about dealing with the aspects of loneliness.

Taylor Swift (You belong to me) – Wanting another girls’ man because they are bad for each other.

Boyz 2 Men (End of the road) – Cliche relationship breakup song

Ed Sheeran (Lego House)- Lego is a metaphor for a relationship, picking up the pieces from an old relationship and starting a new one.

Robbie Williams (Angels)- About being looked after in the current life by loved ones who have passed on.

Maroon 5 (She will be loved) – Song is about having an secret affair

Cyndi Lauper (Time after Time) – The ultimate heartache song, changing together but growing apart over time and moving on after a long term relationship but knowing the love is still mutual.

Bruno Mars (Marry You) – Humorous yet reckless take on marriage , think vegas, alcohol ,the hangover , trashy wedding and plenty of regret in the morning, you get the picture.
